Dylan and Roshie invited Sara and me to join them for the historic Vallejo Season Opener race on their ultralight custom Dogpatch 26, “Moonshine”. We love the Vallejo race – it was the first race we sailed on Velella, our much-beloved Ericson 27.
The downhill run from the bay to Vallejo was awesome. Light winds. Lots of other boats. We flew the masthead kite and drank bud lights and rum and chilled out. I had too much fun. I drank too much rum. I remember nothing after arriving at Vallejo. I think we did well. I don’t remember.
I hurt on Sunday. Good thing the race didn’t get going until after noon. The winds were up, we saw 35 knot gusts in the marina, and poor Moonshine was overpowered with a #4 and reefed main. We couldn’t point and the leadmines streamed by us. We didn’t do so well.
