Chris and Scott invited me to join them onboard Chris’ Farrier F-27 for race 3 of the interclub inside-the-bay race sponsored by Oakland Yacht Club. Six different fleets raced, each with an average of six or seven boats, on a course that was 13.7nm for the slower boats and 18.1nm for the faster boats. We were one of the faster boats.
We finished second overall, just one minute behind the fastest boat on the course, and corrected out into 1st place in our fleet and 1st place overall! While Chris was beating himself up over an upwind course poorly sailed, it was obvious that the superior trimming delivered by Scott and myself led us to victory.
Sailing a trimaran was fun. We maxed out at 19.1 knots, which is crazy fast, but often it didn’t feel like anything special. Sometimes a puff would catch us and the boat would just take off – it was wild to feel so much acceleration – but on our spinnaker run once we were moving it was a very pleasant trip (with some very careful trimming).
