For Sale: 1989 Yamaha FZR400 (Race/Street);
SOLD

FS: Race/street FZR400 plus a garage full of parts!

This bike (and huge collection of parts) was my 2003 racebike in the 450 production and superbike classes with the AFM (http://www.afmracing.org/). I bought it from another racer in 2002, tore it down to the frame and inspected/lubed/reassembled everything, had the motor rebuilt by Dave Norgard, had Aftershocks revalve the suspension, and fixed every problem I could find. It was a great winter project, and an even better racebike. See http://www.fur-o-dynamic.org/ for race pictures.

I crashed it at the last AFM race, and bent the front forks at a 20-degree angle. The battery also died and the fairing was cracked up a bit. Since then I've put in a new battery, swapped in a new set of front brake rotors, reworked the forks with new tubes (with Aftershocks settings), stitched the fairings back together, and fixed a bunch of other small niggling problems.

The triple tree and headstock on the bike are straight. The head bearings aren't notched at all. The triple tree doesn't move forward/backward in the mount. There's no damage to anything else. I spent a long time making sure of that (because I'd have swapped the triple, frame, etc, if it needed it).

The motor (the most important part!) on this bike is fantastic. It's 1mm over, but otherwise stock (450 production legal). It was built at the beginning of the 2003 season by Dave Norgard, who runs at the front of the class (and is a mechanic). It kicks ass. No overheating problems, pulls like a mofo, very strong. The engine work cost me about $1500, and that's about half as much as the work was worth (thanks, Dave).

The suspension is set for a 210lb rider. Forks have .95kg/mm springs and emulators. I very carefully rebuilt the forks according to instructions from Aftershocks. Rear fox twin-clicker has a 700lb spring. Aftershocks revalved (not resprung, or refreshed, but revalved - a $500 job) both mid-season.

The FZR400 is a great bike, perfect for someone looking for a smaller bike, or for those who aren't blessed with long legs. Good to start racing on. The AFM 450p/sb group is very close and friendly. Please contact me if you would like more information, would like to see the bike, etc. I will deliver within a couple of hours.

Thanks,

  • 1989 frame, clean title, current nonop registration
    • several small handlebar dents, and a small gouge on the left frame side, otherwise undamaged
  • 1989 swingarm with welded spools/sliders (for a stand, or to protect the swingarm in a crash)
  • mostly straight subframe
  • 2x engine-mount downtubes with welded-on mounts for frame sliders, plus two sliders (really nice custom parts by Patrick Ho from Performance Concepts, saved the bike several times!)

    • professionally rebuilt by Dave Norgard, FZR400 expert and frontrunner in the AFM 450p and 450sb class, at the beginning of the 2003 season; I blew a hole in a piston and Dave COMPLETELY tore the engine down (past the transmission gears)
    • never given me any problems, pulls REALLY hard for a 1mm motor (I'm 210lbs and can hang with FZRs ridden by people 50lbs lighter)
    • new pistons, rings, bearings, cam chain, etc
    • fully adjusted valves during rebuild
    • one slightly chunked transmission gear was replaced during rebuild
    • slightly decked head
    • stock ignition timing
    • no heat problems during 110F+ days at Thunderhill
    • carefully broken in

  • front suspension
    • forks have 0.95kg/mm race-tech springs, drilled damping rods, race-tech emulators, 20wt oil, revalved by aftershocks halfway through the 2003 race season for a 210lb rider (can adjust by changing spring + oil)
    • have different springs and preload tubes in the spares
  • rear suspension
    • fox twin-clicker shock with remote reservoir, 700lb spring, revalved by aftershocks halfway through 2003 race season for a 210lb rider (can adjust by changing spring); has compression and rebound adjustment, plus ride height adjustment
    • regular length dogbones (+ different length spares)

  • stock wiring harness, can be connected up for street use (I've done this during the 2003 race season)
